The Jugged Hare, Victoria

I've been out drinking in Victoria a few times but up until now I have only found gastro pubs and student-esq watering holes as half decent places to go but nothing that I would be happy to go to time and time again.

Thanks to a tip from my friend Ben, I went for drinks with a friend last night at The Jugged Hare on Vauxhall Bridge Road. Part of the Fullers chain, you are usually guaranteed of a couple of decent real ales on tap. I was disappointed.

I started with the seasonal ale Jack Frost, moved onto Discovery, then Honey Dew (one of my favourite honey ales) and then back to Discovery. All were well kept.

No trip to the pub would be complete without trying the food. One thing that Fullers pubs do well is pies. I also like the fact that the House Pie generally has some link to name of the pub. I've never had Hare Pie before. We opted for a pie sharer plate which had 5 mini pies in total - Chicken, Beef, Vegetable, Mutton, and Hare. All were lovely. I especially liked the mini pots of mash potato, peas and gravy.

As for the pub itself, there was nothing overly remarkable about the interior. The music was kept to a low level so I didn't have to shout and unlike many pubs in London it wasn't too busy. This may have had something to do with the fact it was Tuesday but I am not going to complain.

All in all, if you are in the Victoria area and want a decent pub with good beer and amazing food, I highly recommend The Jugged Hare.
